5 reasons in home newborn photography works well for new parents

I absolutely love in home newborn photography sessions, in fact I’d go as far to say it’s my favourite kind of photoshoot. I’ve found families feel far more chilled during a photoshoot, when they are at home.  I think this is because the environment is familiar and this helps people relax and when families are relaxed & happy, that is when the magic on camera happens! I find for families, being in a familiar, homely environment creates a safe space for them and allows me to capture all those special, tiny moments of joy with their new baby.

Families often have lots of questions about how in home newborn photography works and whether having a photographer in their home, so soon after having their baby is feasible. Here are my top 5 reasons for booking an in home newborn photography session.

1. You do not have to leave your house

For me, this has to be the top reason for an in home newborn photography session! Being a new parent can be exhausting and so making the photo shoot as easy and straight forward as possible, is really important. Being able to remain in your home and have the photographer come to you, just makes things simpler in those early newborn days. There is no leaving the house to get to a photography studio on time, or forgetting something like nappies and having to turn back to pick them up! You have everything you need to hand and believe me, you always seem to need a lot of stuff with babies.

2. It captures your home

This type of session not only captures your new baby, but the home they first live in. This may not seem important at the time, but as years go by and you come back to your photos, it becomes more and more precious, to have these memories of their first home. Small details such as their crib, bedroom wallpaper or even your pets, really tell a story about your home at that specific time. We moved out of our first family home when my daughter was one, so the photographs I have of her as a baby are in a house she no longer recognises. She is only three, but already asks questions about where those photographs were taken and where the house was. I am so glad I have a record of that time, so as she grows up she knows where life started out for her.

3. It can incorporate outside space

In home newborn photography doesn’t just have to stay in the confines of your house. If you are feeling ready to get outside, I often find taking some photographs outside in your garden or your local park, is a lovely way to end a session. It gives you more variety in your photographs and let’s everyone get a bit of fresh air, while not having to venture too far.

4. In home newborn photography tends to be more natural in style.

Having a newborn photography session in your home means the photographs are more lifestyle than posed studio shots. This type of photography is all about capturing your baby as they are. We have time to get the cute, curled up, sleeping images, but there is also time to capture your little one when they wake up. Having cuddles while you sip a (cold) cup of tea, nursing your little one, or even having their outfit changed. In home newborn photography is all about capturing them naturally with no posing or props.

5. Siblings are in their own environment where they feel happy and safe

Capturing the relationship between your new baby and their siblings is one of the most special parts of newborn photography. I recently was on the other side of the camera. Having just had my son we decided to invest in an in home newborn photography session, as I am so rarely in the photographs I capture of my family! Being the client for once, was an eye opener, because I felt all the worries and stresses, that I so often reassure my own client families about. The thing that stressed me out before the session, was how we would entertain our older daughter while the photoshoot was going on. Needless to say, it went a lot better than I had envisaged! One of the benefits of having a photoshoot at home is that your older children are in their own environment where they feel comfortable. You can whip up snacks for them easily and all their toys are there for them to play with throughout the session. Whether it’s bouncing on the bed, playing with their favourite teddy bear or showing you their dolls house, having their toys around to entertain them really helps put them at ease.

So there you have it, I am definitely an advocate for in home newborn photography. If you are about to have a baby and would like to find out more about these kind of sessions please do get in touch, I’d love to hear from you :0)
